Let’s be honest; some jobs just suck, but you may not know what to say when quitting a job you just started. Most likely, you would have never taken the job if you knew how bad it sucked. Most people wouldn’t go through the process of building a résumé, going on the job hunt, and putting on their best interview personalities if they just intended to quit right away. Still, others may have taken a job knowing they were going to quit soon after because they just needed to earn a little extra cash real quick.
Whatever the case; you still may not know what to say when quitting a job you just started. You may not know what to say to your employer, what to say to your family, or what to say to your coworkers. To make it simple on yourself; just be honest. Don’t feel bad about doing what’s best for you.
Why Employees Don’t Know What to Say When Quitting a Job
As employees, we are conditioned to always put our employer’s needs first. But why not start putting your needs first for a change! For example, an employee is conditioned to always give a 30-day notice before quitting a job. This allows the employer enough time to make his or her necessary arrangements, which usually involves hiring and training someone else to fill the vacated position. But what if the shoe was on the other foot?
Do you not realize that while you’re sitting here frantic about what to say when quitting a job you just started, your employer would can you faster than you can blink an eye if he or she needed to? Do you think your employer would say something like, “Hey, some unexpected things have come up, and in about 30 days from now, we’re going to have to relieve you of your services.” No. They’re going to fire you. So, why be so loyal to someone who would never be loyal to you? You have a professional relationship with your boss, and you don’t owe them anything. Don’t be afraid to tell it like it is, and don’t be afraid to hurt some feelings if you have to.
Don’t Expect People to Support You
You’re likely quitting a new job because you want to do something that’s better for you. Sadly, our parents, our friends, and even our partners often don’t agree about what’s best for us. Their minds have been conditioned to “Go to school, graduate, go to college, and get a good job,” and they don’t like when anyone breaks that mold. Still, you’re the only one who puts your shoes on, and it’s your face that stares back at you when you look in the mirror. Do what’s best for you first because you have to live with yourself for the rest of your life!
Unfortunately, it’s the people who are supposed to encourage us who discourage us. If you are wondering what to say when quitting a job you just started, tell it like it is.
